After the discovery of tea in 1823, people migrated to Assam in search
of Work. They are mainly from Orissa, undivided Bihar, undivided Madhya
Pradesh, West Bengal and Andhra Pradesh. In due course of time they
became an integral part of vast Assamese community and popularly known
as "Tea Tribes". But still they have a cultural diversity, as their
original habitations are different.
